The Republic of Indonesia is a Southeast Asian nation and member of ASEAN. The country comprises about 17,508 islands and shares land borders with Papua New Guinea, East Timor and Malaysia, while its territory is close to the maritime borders of Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, the Philippines, Palau, Australia and the Indian territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Indonesia is the fourth most populous country worldwide, with more than 255 million inhabitants. Its capital and most populated city is Jakarta, on the island of Java, where about 10 million people live, the figure reaching 30 million if counting its entire metropolitan area. In Indonesia there are more than a hundred spoken languages, but the official and most widely spoken is Bahasa. Its official currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR).

Indonesia is the largest economy in Southeast Asia and also a member of the G-20. The country has a wide variety of natural resources, including crude oil, coal, natural gas, tin, copper and gold. It is one of the main exporters of oil, tin and rubber worldwide. A large part of its active population is engaged in agriculture, with plantations producing rubber, tobacco, sugar, cassava, palm oil, coffee, tea and cocoa, mainly for export. In addition, it is a primary producer of timber, teak, ebony, bamboo and rattan, and is the world's leading exporter of plywood.
